The Craiglockhart Woods Group

Craiglockhart Woods is part of a wild and beautiful spot within

the City of Edinburgh, less than three miles from Princes Street.

There is an abundance of Flora (and Fauna) in the area, with hills,

a very large pond, a stream, and of course - lots of trees.

In October 1997 the City of Edinburgh Council (CEC) proposed the

sale  of 1.21 acres of land at Craiglockhart Terrace for a housing development.

The Community responded by setting up the Save Craiglockhart woods Campaign and in March 1998 the Council agreed to reverse their decision provided the Group could raise the money to demolish a derelict building on the site and to resurface the broken concrete remains of a former curling rink. The money was raised and the work carried out within a few weeks.  working in partnership with the City of Edinburgh Council to preserve and improve the woodland area of the Craiglockhart Hills Urban Wildlife Site for the enjoyment of members of the public with special provision for people with disabilities”

!!!NEWSFLASH  NEW NAME!!!

It has been an exciting few months for the Craiglockhart Woods Group with some important changes in prospect.  After discussions with The Friends of Craiglockhart Nature Trail committee, it has been agreed to merge our two groups to create a new group:

FRIENDS OF CRAIGLOCKHART WOODS

AND NATURE TRAIL (FCWNT)

As well as continuing to preserve and improve our local woods, the new group will focus efforts on conserving and enhancing wildlife and biodiversity in the area.  The FCWNT will continue to work closely with Edinburgh City Council, Edinburgh Napier University (the landowners) and other relevant organisations whose objectives include the protection and preservation of the Easter Craiglockhart Hill Local Nature Reserve and surroundings.

The merger was approved unanimously at an extraordinary meeting of the two groups on June 8th held at the Tennis Centre

Do Not Miss It!!

Over the last 13 years the group has been working with the City Coucil and various charitable bodies to improve the conditions of the footpaths and steps to help make this amenity available to all.

Funds raised at the annual fete have enabled the group to obtain matching funds from various organisations to finance these improvements.
